Archaeology

Theory session

An introduction to numismatics—the study of coins as historical sources—and to the supporting disciplines used in archaeology.

Hands-on activity

On a mock excavation site in the Centre’s courtyard, children conduct their own archaeological investigation to find an “artefact”—a coin.

After cleaning and conservation in the archaeology classroom, children identify whether their coin is Thracian or Roman and determine which metal it is made from.

We attach a magnet to each coin the children find, so they can keep it as a memento of their visit to the Maltepe Archaeological Complex in Manole.
